Beyond Start-up: Founder Series What's Your Why

You'll hear me make three clear points when I speak at schools and colleges. 1. Do something you love and love what you do. 2. Perfect your art and be the best at it. 3. When 1 and 2 are on point, money will flow towards you...

Beyond Start-up: Founder Series What's Your Why

I'm just putting it out there!

How It Began

Mobile phones were all the rage. Alan Sugar was the captain of British industry and Manchester United Football Club ruled under Alex Ferguson (thats a soccer team to our American friends).

Three conversations changed my life and this was how I found my why!

Manager's Conversation

Its the mid 90's. I'm in London and I began working for the fastest growing insurance broker in the UK. Within my first month of starting, I had this pivatol conversation with my manager:

Ian: Is this it?
Mgr: Is this it, what?

Ian: Is this what I've got to do for the rest of my life?
Mgr: You get paid don't you? Get on with it and stop your noise.

The conversation was brief, but I knew then I would run my own company and create jobs for other people. I knew I would inspire others to do more. I knew I would build something that would outlive me. What I didn't know, that would be RecruitSumo Inc.

Sidenote: That manager turned out to be one of my mentors for many years and we've remained friends ever since.

Brother's Conversation

My brothers are smarter than me, they have a better education than me and as they are older: they were always stronger than me. Grrr!

Brother#1: What's up with you, why the long face?
Ian: Work sucks. It's boring. It's pointless and I hate it!

Brother#1: How do you think 90% of the working population feel?
Ian: I don't know but I don't have to accept it.

Brother#1: Who do you think you are? This is called life...
Ian: This is called your life, I'll do something different.

Sidenote: I was never one to follow the crowd. I had no passion for what I was doing and his nonsense spurred me on. I despise negativity, there is always another way. You just need to look further than the end of your nose.

Mother's Conversation

Your father owned a TV store in North West London. It was the first of its kind at the time. However, he became distracted and didn't focus on the business. That store went on to become Radio Rentals, and in Alan Sugar's book, it's where he completed one of his first deals to sell Amstrad computers. Ironic eh!

Sidenote: Maybe, just maybe, I was born with an entrepreneurial spark. All I know is these three conversation set me on a path.

The Path

You'll hear me make three clear points when I speak at schools and colleges.

  1. Do something you love and love what you do.
  2. Perfect your art and be the best at it.
  3. When 1 and 2 are on point, money will flow towards you.

Sidenote: When I started the race, I started by myself. It was lonely and daunting. Everyone doubts you and waits for you to fail. Then one day, they congratulate you and you think, ha, I told you so.

Goals

I do not seek fame or desire being in front of the camera. I do not seek great wealth or being front page news. At my very core, I always want to help people, so instead I've always wanted to create jobs for others. I know the more jobs I create, the wealthier I become. Its a byproduct of what I do, not why I do, what I do.

Sidenote: If you would like to be part of something special that's happening across two continents, then use the 'blue' contact us form and tell me your 'why'.
