As a noob in growth hacking, I have a personal struggle. Should RecruitSumo buy followers? I'd like to think the material I post is worthy of viewers and followers in their own right. It is in fact a shame they don't reach more people, as I do search the bowels of the internet to find some pretty darn entertaining tech related humor. Herein lies the conundrum. When and why should I purchase followers for any of our social media profiles?
Though the specifics of algorithms vary between platforms, generally speaking the more people you have as followers, the more importance each post is given when being placed on a feed. If I'm at 350 organic followers, I'll be seen much less than someone who has 1000 followers whether or not they were purchased and regardless of content.
On the same token, the amount of people you are following needs to stay lower than the amount of followers you have in order to stay towards the top of a feed as well. This requires strategic follow backs which may be unfortunate if there are profiles of people who are of interest but not your target audience.
There's a school of thought amongst followers. The more followers a person/entity has, the more seriously they will be taken. This means as we continue to build our following, we won't be able to attract as many as we will once we hit a higher number. In effect, purchasing followers would give us some legitimacy early on.
On the other hand, if we were to purchase followers, there's no guarantee they'll be our target audience. So let's say we purchase a 100 and just 10% is our target audience, it means just 10 people will have any interest in any promotions we end up having. It's sort of a false sense of interest and could lead to failed promotions in the future.
Is it inauthentic to buy followers? My conscience says yes, but it's a game of numbers that has been built into these platforms that cause people to resort to such tactics. It's not our fault we're new to any given community. Plus there are a lot of voices out there. There's a lot of noise you have to get through to be heard. Could we be shooting ourselves in the foot by sticking to the notion that purchasing followers is somehow cheating or less than honest?
Funnily enough, I don't have the answer. It's a question every new company will have to answer on their own. I'm not here to judge. I get it. I get the pros and cons of this decision. I even get the urgency of coming to a conclusion.
However, I'm not quite ready to make the leap. With continued adjustments we may still be able to organically reach our goal of 1000 in an acceptable amount of time. If not, we'll revisit the drawing board.
